Abstract
ABSTRACT In the Gospel of John, Jesus’s opponents interact with him as a false teacher and deceiver of Israel. From this perspective, the standard interpretation of the gathering of the Sanhedrin in John 11:47–53 as a description of political pragmatism must be rethought in order to allow for the Jewish leaders to express and enact an opposition to Jesus that is both theologically and politically motivated. If this reading is correct, then the Fourth Gospel engages directly with one of the most persistent reasons that “the Jews” rejected Jesus.
