Abstract

I am reminded of a personal experience I had while sailing Third Mate on a Liberty ship in early 1943. One day, in a North African port, shortly after arriving from a wintry and storm-tossed North Atlantic crossing, I came upon the Master and the Second Mate in a rather disagreeable mood. You have to picture them a little to understand it. The Master - stern, conservative, nervous and slight, Lithuanian born, spoke with a strong accent and took things very seriously. The Mate -his antithesis: young, burly, brash, over-confident native-born son of the U.S. of A.
