Abstract
This article analyzes the complex textual problems of the second part of Lope de Vega’s Don Juan de Castro. The play was published in 1624 within Lope’s Parte XIX, and it was included again, posthumously, in Lope’s Parte XXV, perfecta y verdadera (1647), in which it has a different title, Las aventuras de don Juan de Alarcos. The situation, in principle, would invite to edit the text of Parte XIX without major complications, because the version of Parte XXV introduces different changes that move the play away from Lope’s original. However, it also presents several readings that are better than those of the princeps, some of considerable importance, which poses the problem of to which extent the text of Parte XIX should be corrected, in the belief that reliable readings lost in Parte XIX survived in Parte XXV. This situation may also serve, partially, as an approximation to the textual status of Parte XXV.
