Abstract

Previous work has examined the migration of the elderly, and the tenure choice of the elderly, but rarely the tenure choice of the elderly that migrate. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the migrating elderly are found to undertake more tenure change than one might expect. A multinomial logit analysis indicates that home equity, income, and age have dramatic influences on the tenure choices of the elderly. Being married and becoming retired have some effect, although other demographic variables are not found to be strong influences. A limited role is found for housing market variables. A similar analysis for non-migrating movers is substantially different, justifying the separate treatment of migrants.
