Abstract

s in previous years, the 2012 IEEE Summer School was held on Berder’s Island, Morbihan Gulf, Brittany, France (for more details, the reader may visit http://ieeess.enstbretagne.fr/). Since 1994, nearly 500 promising young researchers (Ph.D. students, postdoctoral scientists, and researchers in the industry) have attended this school, which offers a unique place for high-level and in-depth scientific exchanges while fostering participation in the adventure of research. The school not only contributes to a major mission of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS)—training of the next-generation researchers—but also provides the Society with worldwide visibility (in addition to that provided by its top journals and regional and international conferences). The high number of applicants results in a difficult selection process for the international committee members, where special attention is paid not only to applicants’ scientific performance, motivation, and reference letters but also to gender issues and the applicants’ countries of origin, especially emerging countries. The 2012 IEEE Summer School gathered 46 researchers from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Korea, China, India, Syria, and, for the first time, from Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Mexico (Figure 1). Many European countries were represented, including the United Kingdom, The Tenth IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging
