Abstract

This essay examines liminal experience in the Coen brothers' 2009 film, A Serious Man. It explores the themes of uncertainty, initiation, and religious experience, ultimately suggesting that this nihilistic story tilts toward a hidden but genuine spiritual response to the questions of psychic and cultural fragmentation.
