Abstract

The temperature dependence of the optical phonon frequencies in ZnSe and ZnTe and the L.O. phonon linewidth in ZnSe has been measured in the temperature region from 340°K to 2°K. The total frequency shift of the L.O. phonon in ZnSe (ZnTe) in this region is 5.4 cm −1 (3.7 cm −1 ± 1 cm −1. This shift is found to be about a factor of six (four) greater than that predicted by the Grüneisen theory. The results are compared to recent measurements of the pressure dependence of the optical phonon frequencies. An attempt has been made to fit the linewidth and frequency shift in terms of three and four phonon interactions.
