Abstract

In 1983, researchers of the Telemark Polyp Study offered screening sigmoidoscopy to 400 people from the general population of Telemark County, Norway, and identified a matched control group of 399 people who did not know they were in the study. Any polyp detected by sigmoidoscopy in the screened group led to colonoscopy. Patients with adenomas in 1983 were invited for follow-up examinations in 1985 and 1989.
