Abstract

This entry provides an introduction to the concept of teenage girls' “bedroom culture.” It considers the historical context from which the concept emerged and explains why bedroom culture has primarily been considered as a culture in which girls engage. The entry then goes on to consider how bedroom culture has been explored in more recent years, particularly in the context of young people's highly mediated and global worlds. In this respect, bedroom culture can be understood as existing beyond the four walls of a bedroom and engaged in by teenage boys as well as girls. Finally, this entry considers bedroom culture from different angles, for example, how young people use their bedrooms as a space of cultural politics, identity, and activism.
