Abstract

The left and right optic lobes of fish are interconnected by two fiber tracts, the tectal and posterior commissures. The following shows that in Astronotus ocellatus interocular transfer of a pattern discrimination may be blocked by prior section of the tectal commissure even though the posterior commissure remains intact. Since it has previously been reported that one can record the electrical activity of single fibers from the tectal commissure, further analysis of this comparatively simple system may lead towards a precise physiological description of how commissural cells code information involved in the side-to-side transfer of learning and memory.
