Abstract

Subject The prospects for a technological singularity. Significance Advances in artificial intelligence have prompted predictions of a 'technological singularity' -- a rapid transition to a society in which machines possessing superhuman intelligence play a central role and human labour becomes superfluous through automation. Impacts Technology progress could lead to economic growth that increases demand for human labour rather than rendering it obsolete. A post-singularity world with vast aggregate wealth could still have political conflicts over its distribution. Some tasks are never likely to be fully automated because consumers value having them done by humans.
