Abstract
The important anatomical and physiological factors of the epidural space are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of epidural anesthesia are presented. A brief history of epidural anesthesia is given. A detailed presentation is given of the technique of administering epidural anesthesia as was used in 617 thoracic surgical cases at the Missouri State Sanatorium at Mount Vernon, Missouri from October 30, 1945 to August 24, 1949.
