Abstract

In this book the author explores the technical development of roads in Britain up until the end of the twentieth century by examining the development of the construction of the road pavement, the structure of the road, the study of the need for roads and consequent development of the road network against the political, social, military and economic background of the times. The chapters include: (1) introduction; (2) prehistoric trackways; (3) Roman roads; (4) the years of neglect; (5) Scotland's military roads; (6) eighteenth and nineteenth century roads; (7) the coming of the motor car; (8) motorways; (9) conclusion; (10) appendices on materials used for road construction and skidding resistance.
