Abstract

The importance of providing service courses in statistics cannot be overemphasized. This is because modern statistics provides a research methodology for acquiring new knowledge in most fields of study. The problems and dangers of service course programmes that are ill-planned are pointed out. The problems of allowing these courses to be taught by staff who are themselves not well-rounded in the field of statistics are also noted. As suggestions, course outlines for introductory service courses in statistics are given for the Social Sciences, Agricultural and Biological Sciences and the Physical Sciences and Engineering. Some tips on the actual teaching of a service course in statistics are given. The question of who should teach a service course in statistics is considered together with the issue of preserving statistics as a mathematical science. Certain recommendations are also made.
