Abstract
The concept of a teaching nursing home (TNH) is emerging as a major focus for the development of academic geriatric programs, yet the concept has not been fully defined. The essence of the concept is to bring nursing homes into the mainstream of the health care delivery system and academia. The TNH provides a visible focus on an academic campus for the development of geriatric programs, reaching out both into the hospital setting and into the community. This article reviews the origins of the teaching nursing home concept, describes its goals and major components, and explores some of the problems in developing it as a academic program. It is felt that the teaching nursing home, if properly developed to meet its potential, can be a strong academic program that improves geriatric patient care, research, and teaching.
