Abstract

SUMMARY This article approaches relationships from primarily a systemic-psychodynamic framework in that psychoanalytic interpretations and assumptions are integrated into a basic systemic orientation The paper focuses on the prerelationship developmental tasks, relationship developmental tasks, the role of love and intimacy in emotional maturity, and the traps and pitfalls commonly encountered by couples, as illustrated by the activation of protective, defensive mechanisms. The material is illustrated by a case presentation. Implications for counseling are considered throughout.
