Abstract

Arias et al1 present an autopsy study showing that increased neurofibrillary tangle accumulation as commonly seen in Alzheimer's disease was associated with the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis. Similar to other studies, they did not see increased β-amyloid plaque in patients with carotid disease.2,3 Tantalizingly, they further show that patients who underwent carotid endarterectomy for their carotid disease had significantly lower neurofibrillary densities compared with those who did not undergo carotid intervention.
