Abstract

A closed-form formula for the tangential stresses on the boundary of a radially loaded hole in an infinite orthotropic plate is developed. The solution is based on the general solution given by Green (1945, Proc. R. Soc., Series A 184, 173) using the complex variable approach. The evaluation of the quantities contained in the formula is considered and their numerical calculation is demonstrated. For isotropic materials, the formula derived in the present work is shown to be of simple mathematical form. The present solution can be used in conjunction with an approximate radial stress distribution to obtain good estimates of the stresses around pin-loaded plates.
