Abstract

The logical symbolism used by Stanislaw Lesniewski (1886-1939), his specific metalogical terminology and the philosophical introductions. to his formal works evoke in his readers the feeling of the peculiarity of the problems with which he deals. The question thus arises : in what relation are Lesniewski's investigations to the whole trend of logical research in the first half of the 20th century ? In the present paper I wish to give a brief answer to this question. Although I do not feel competent to give a proper historical account of Lesniewski's role in the development of logic, I believe that it might be useful to precede a formal logical discussion of his systems by some general histori? cal remarks.
