Abstract

Although numerous marital enrichment programs have been developed and offered to couples in recent years, none have been based on the systems theoretical framework. This is surprising in light of the popularity and apparent effectiveness of systems theory in the marriage and family therapy field. The present paper reports the development of one such model which is recommended for comparative outcome studies. The Systems Marriage Enrichment Program was developed from the systems concepts of circular causality, the identification of predictable interaction patterns, and the adaptive and homeostatic mechanisms. A protocol process consisting of five phases is presented with goals and techniques identified for each phase.
