Abstract

This paper discusses the need for changes in the generally accepted systems development methodologies in the light of the increased use of fourth generation languages and their associated techniques. It puts forward the opinion that an evolutionary development approach is the best way of obtaining the advantages of prototyping techniques, while at the same time retaining the benefits of a structured systems analysis and design methodology. The paper goes on to describe what is meant by an evolutionary development methodology, and identifies seven essential ingredients which must be present in such a methodology if the full potential of fourth generation advances are to be realized.
