Abstract

The luminescence of the compounds , , and has been investigated under 2537Aå radiation and cathode ray excitation for a wide range of manganese concentrations. Under 2537Aå radiation, each compound emits in the orange or orange‐red with a peak intensity near 6200Aå at room temperature. For each composition there is a broad maximum in the relative intensity between concentrations of 0.1–1%. The 3:2 compound appears to yield the brightest phosphor, but the 2:1 compound is only slightly less intense for equivalent manganese additions. The 2:3 compound yields only half the relative brightness of the 3:2 compound for equivalent manganese concentrations.Under cathode ray excitation, the 2:1 and 3:2 compounds fluoresce orange and the 2:3 compound fluoresces green for manganese concentrations between 0.01 and 2%.
