Abstract
Abstract A revision of the Syntrichia ruralis complex in Belgium was undertaken. Four taxa: S ruralis, S. ruralis var. arenicola, S. intermedia and S. intermedia var. calva , are recognized. Syntrichia princeps is also accepted, though tentatively, due to its synoecious condition. Syntrichia densa, S. calcicola and S. ruralis s.str. form a series of intergrades and the first two are considered as extreme morphological expressions of the latter. The morphological variability of these taxa, their ecology and distribution in Belgium are studied and a key is provided.
