Abstract

AbstractThe phosphonic acids and the phosphinic acids may be regarded as derivatives of phosphoric acid in which one or two hydroxyls are replaced by organic radicals. Although individual phosphonic and phosphinic acids have been known for several decades, the syntheses of these two classes of compounds have not been well developed. This chapter is concerned only with the introduction of phosphorus‐containing functions, i.e, the synthesis of acids or their functional derivatives, which can be isolated and hydrolyzed to the acids.
