Abstract

Three compounds with an Mn 5Si 3-type crystal structure have been studied; of these, Y 5Sn 3 and Y 5Pb 3 were found to be unstable in air, but Y 5Si 3 was stable. This difference is attributed to the stronger covalent component of the chemical bond in Y 5Si 3. Electrical measurements on this material have been carried out and a characteristic temperature of 225 K has been obtained.
