Abstract

In order to help evaluate possible mechanisms of superconductivity, we have prepared a new member of the RBa 2Cu 3O 7 series, CmBa 2Cu 3O 7. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern was obtained for a single phase compound, isostructural with the orthorhombic phase of YBa 2Cu 3O 7. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that CmBa 2Cu 3O 7 is not superconducting. There is evidence of long-range magnetic ordering at 22 K. These results are compared with the behavior of PrBa 2Cu 3O 7, the only other nonsuperconducting compound with the YBa 2Cu 3O 7 structure.
