Abstract

In this study, we investigate seed oil from the fruit of Butia capitata, a native palm from South America, as feedstock for fatty acid methyl ester synthesis. Determination of the fatty acid profile, saponification index, acidity index, iodine index, viscosity index, flash point and levels of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium demonstrate that it is a suitable starting material for biofuel according to the requirements of Brazilian, American and European agencies and that it has the typical characteristics for use with fossil fuel and the possibility of application in diesel-based engines without drastic performance changes.
