Abstract

Due to increasing levels of societal demand, water resources become further stressed. Therefore, knowledge of the internal renewable water resources of a country becomes strategic information which is needed for long-term planning of a nation's water and food security. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is a powerful watershed model for simulating the effect of watershed processes and management on soil and water resources. The SWAT-CUP (calibration and uncertainty program) is a computer program for calibration of SWAT models. By processing SWAT- CUP, the freshwater components blue water flow (i.e., water yield plus deep aquifer recharge), green water flow (i.e., actual evapotranspiration), and green water storage (i.e., soil water) can be quantified. Thus, the spatially and temporally detailed freshwater resources information can be used in advanced water management and other further studies. Though, in the meantime, quantities of uncertainties must be concerned, the credibility of the results is acceptable. In this paper, the Guishui River Basin is selected as study area. The whole procedure of application of SWAT-CUP is discussed in details.
