Abstract

SummaryNaive Herring Gull chicks seize and swallow fish by the head end. In experiments with 16 hand‐raised chicks it was determined that the choice is made simply by recognition of the wider or thicker end of the fish. The position of the eyes, fins, gill opercula, etc., appeared to be ignored. Speculations are advanced about the possible adaptive significance of swallowing fish head first.
