Abstract
Background: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of Parkinson's disease (PD) is performed to exclude the diagnosis of other parkinsonism diseases. In recent years, using the 3T-susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI), nigrosome-1 of the midbrain substantia nigra can be visualized and reported as useful for PD diagnosis. Nigrosome-1 can be visualized as a wedge high signal area using 3T-SWI, which is surrounded by substantia nigra and medial leminiscus, and it looks like a swallow tail appearance. In PD, the high signal of nigrosome-1 is obscured because it is presumed increase of the iron concentrations of the nigrosome-1.
