Abstract
This little monograph deals with current concepts of production, survival and destruction of human platelets. Results of the author's own investigative work in these fields comprise the bulk of the material but a comprehensive review of the literature is included. There has been considerable interest in the fate of blood platelets in the body of late, with argument focused on the mechanism of platelet destruction, ie, random removal due to continued coagulation of blood, or senescence. The author wisely refrains from taking a firm stand because of the limitations of current experimental techniques. The format of the book is that of an outline along the style of a European doctoral thesis which is not conducive to reading. Interest in this volume will be limited largely to investigators in the field of hematology.
