Abstract

A retrospective chart review was done on 34 patients with esotropia who had bilateral medial rectus recessions of 6 mm or more. Successful treatment was considered final alignment within 10 prism diopters of orthophoria with one surgical procedure. The success rate averaged 76%. A group of 25 of the series had congenital onset esotropia and the success rate was 80%. A group of 6 of the series had partially accommodative esotropia and the success rate in this group was 100%. The remaining group of 3 patients had late onset esotropia and the success rate was 0%, and all required a second surgical procedure. Our analysis indicated that for 50–55 prism diopter deviations, 6 mm recessions were suitable; and for 60–65 prism diopter deviations, 6.5 mm recessions were suitable. However, optimal treatment for 70 or more prism diopter deviations was not determined.
