Abstract

Within days of the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the COVIDSurg Collaborative was established, to which 88 countries signed up to support pandemic-related surgical planning and practice. COVID-19-related surgical challenges considered include cancer surgery, colorectal surgery, robot assisted surgery, spinal surgery, surgical education and tracheal injury repair. Non-surgical aspects of COVID-19 include ethical challenges and the emotional challenges of both patients and staff. Future consideration should be given to different organisational approaches and to pandemic planning that anticipates further waves of COVID-19 infection. Patients and staff may need to undergo rigorous screening to minimise the risk of cross-infection. In view of a second wave, George Winter explores how surgeons and physicians adapt and improve during persistent uncertainty.
