Abstract
(1) The surface precipitation reaction has been obtained in the eggs of fifteen marine animals. (2) The reaction assumes a characteristic form for each species. (3) Two general types of reactions occur. One which is accompanied by breakdown of some type of protoplasmic granule (as inArbacia, Asterias, Echinarachnius, Cerebratulus andNereis). The other, in which there is no disintegration of granules (Gonionemus, Phascolosoma, Amphitrite, Hydroides, Chaetopterus, Cumingia, Mytilus, Chaetopleura andPodarke). (4) The presence of calcium is a necessary requisite for the reaction.
