Abstract

The determination of the surface potential of the monolayers of grisorixin, a polyether carboxylic ionophore which acts as a specific complexing agent for K + ions, spread out on subphases of differing composition, shows that at pH≤5 no complex is formed with the alkaline cations. At pH>5, the potassium ions are preferentially complexed with respect to the caesium ions. The stability constant and dipole moments of the different species of the ionophore (protonated GH, charged G − and complexed GK) in the superficial phase have been determined. These show that in the latter phase, grisorixon has a dissociation constant which can be compared to that of a carboxylic acid in aqueous solution.
