Abstract

Cylindrocarpon radicicola Wr. forms a predominant component of the surface mycoflora of Fraxinus excelsior roots. Its predominance is especially evident on actively growing root tips, which enlarge the area of root system. The fungus occurs in an active mycelial state throughout the year. The usefulness of the Harley-Waid method for isolating such mycelia was once more confirmed. The hyphae form mycelial strands, thus ensuring the greater vitality of the fungus in soil space. In comparative experiments with other forest woody and herbaceous plants the predominant presence of C. radicicola was again established. Therefore, this fungus is assumed to be a common inhabitant of root surfaces of higher plants.
