Abstract

The abrasive wear properties and corrosion performance (including chemical corrosion and electrochemical corrosion) of 9Cr18 steel before and after nitrogen ion implantation were investigated in the present work. The effect of different doses of implanted nitrogen on the abrasive wear properties was also studied. It was found that nitrogen ion implantation up to 3×10 17 ions cm −2 could significantly improve the abrasive wear properties of the steel by decreasing the wear rate. Increasing the implantation dose has the effect of prolonging the wear-resistant period. The chemical corrosion and the multipolarization tests revealed a marked decrease in the corrosion rate and enoblement of the steel after nitrogen ion implantation.
