Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory for ultra-high energy cosmic rays is under construction in Argentina. The Surface Detector of the Observatory will consist when completed of 1600 water Cerenkov tanks sampling ground particles of air showers induced by energetic particles in the atmosphere. The Surface Detector with nearly 400 detector stations currently in operation is already the largest Cosmic Ray detector ever constructed and has started steady data taking a few months ago. A large number of events above 10 19 eV has been detected as well as good quality hybrid data from combined measurements with both Surface and Fluorescence detectors. The current status of the Auger Surface Detector, its performances and preliminary data will be presented.
