Abstract
An article recently published in the Anatomical Record clarified the morphology of the supreme intercostal artery (SIA), validating in particular the intersegmental artery (ISA) nomenclature proposed by Dorcas Padget’s in 1954 (Padget, 1954; Gailloud, 2014). While it is generally believed that the SIA is formed by the first thoracic ISA (T1) and, in most instances, the second one (T2) as well, that article emphasized that the fundamental component of the SIA was in fact the last cervical ISA (C7). The author even suggested that, in its simplest form, the SIA should only include the last cervical ISA, admitting, however, having never encountered this hypothetical configuration (Gailloud, 2014).
