Abstract

Antibiotics suppressed the induction of PR1a protein in tobacco leaf discs by mannitol but not by salicylic acid. Mannitol suppressed the induction of PR1a protein by salicylic acid, increasing concentrations of mannitol progressively inhibiting PR1a protein accumulation. This suppression was probably due to an inhibition of total protein synthesis by mannitol. It is probable that the previously reported induction of pathogenesis-related proteins by mannitol is due to the activity of contaminating micro-organisms present either in the mannitol solution or within the plant.
