Abstract

The paper considers six EU Nuts II regions (Lombardy and Tuscany for Italy, Rhone-Alpes and Paca for France, Catalunya and Murcia for Spain) and studies the processing sector of organic products, investigating its links with agriculture and the retailing sector. The choice of these regions is due to the fact that the analysis is linked to a European project concerning cohesion among Mediterranean countries. The purpose is to analyze the processing sector of organic products in terms of firm capabilities to perform a quality management strategy and to analyze the vertical coordination in the organic supply chains. The survey was carried out on a sample of 304 firms stratified on the basis of the six regions involved in the study. Results showed the importance of the assurance of product safety and quality for organic-products processing-firms. The instruments for undergoing quality management are focused on specific regulations and controls. Specialized shops, direct sales, and supermarkets represent the main trade channels for organic products.
