Abstract

The superconducting magnet system for the new stellaratorWendelstein7-X, to be located at Greifswald, Germany, consists of 50non-planar and 20 planar large magnet coils. The conductor used is acable-in-conduit type, composed of copper stabilized NbTi strands andenveloped by an aluminium alloy jacket (CICC). The individual winding packsare built up from six (three) double layers, glass insulated and resinimpregnated. A cast steel casing encapsulates each winding pack to achievesufficient mechanical stiffness. The toroidal set-up of the coil system weighs400 tons and has a diameter of 11 metres. Operation will be at 6 T and a coilcurrent of 1.75 MA. Cooling is provided by supercritical helium. A fastde-energizing system protects the magnet from overheating in the case of aquench.
