Abstract

A systematic analysis is made of the forces which act on a magnetic specimen freely suspended in a Faraday magnetometer in which both the field and field gradient are produced by coaxial superconducting coils. Suggestions are made for improving the design of this type of superconducting solenoid. It is found that this magnetometer is less susceptible to lateral instability effects than are ones which use conventional iron electromagnets.
