Abstract
The sulphide promoted interconversion of heavy metal organometallics plays an important rôle in their environmental transport and decomposition. We report here the results of a study of the reactions of trimethyllead chloride with sulphide in aqueous systems. The influence of a number of factors on the reaction was studied, including relative concentrations, pH and natural sediments. A reaction intermediate bis(trimethyllead) sulphide was identified and also the effect of anions other than sulphide on the trimethyllead/tetramethyllead interconversion was examined. It is concluded that the formation of tetramethyllead from trimethyllead compounds in natural systems arises mainly from chemical disproportionation rather than biomethylation.
