Abstract
Voltaire’s strictures have ensured that no one reads the exploratory work of Pierre-Antoine de La Place (1707-93), who attempted to introduce Shakespeare to French readers. Never a translator, despite what has been written by generations of critics who take Voltaire’s word as law, La Place argued that his paraphrases and précis of Shakespeare's work offered an alternative to the iron-clad rules of neoclassical theatrical composition.
