To the Editor. —What philological explanation is there in the suffix caine as it is used in numerous pain-killer combinations? Take, for instance, tetracaine (Pontocaine), chloroprocaine (Nesacaine) hydrochloride, procaine hydrochloride (Novocain), dibucaine (Nupercaine) hydrochloride, cyclomethycaine sulfate (Surfacaine), lidocaine (Xylocaine), cocaine, piperocaine (Metycaine) hydrochloride.
