Abstract

The course and methods of outpatient behavioral treatment for a 26-yr-old heroin addict are described. Treatment goals were specified as: the elimination ofthe heroin dependency; the improvement of the patient's self concept; and the installation of new pro-social attitudes and behaviors. Each of the goals was realized in turn in the course of a 4-month period, contrary to the therapist's expectations. The most difficult aspect of therapy proved to be the establishment of positive social behaviors. Implications for the therapist and for further research are discussed.
