Abstract

Introduction/Aims: The submental island flap (SMIF) is a useful alternative flap in the reconstruction of oral cancer defects. We present a case series of 11 patients over a 3-year period that had SMIF and compare their outcome with patients that had radial forearm free-flap (RFFF) reconstruction. We find the SMIF to be a reliable alternative in select patient-group such as the elderly or those with significant medical co-morbidities.
