Abstract

The sponge Halichondria panicea is abundant in the sublittoral Menai Strait where there are strong tidal currents. A large and varied fauna is found associated with the sponge and the prominent species appear to be distributed according to depth, this being probably a function of current speed. Most of the associated species were found in other habitats such as Laminaria holdfasts and upon hydroids. Even so, at least one species, Caprella linearis , appeared to be chemically attracted to the Halichondria and was present in very high densities. Several species of bottom-living fish were found to prey almost solely upon the prominent epifauna of the sponge.
