Abstract

Two aspects of the use of silicate cement have been examined. Experiments were carried out, using dental students, to illustrate the wide variation that can occur in the subjective assessment of the shade of teeth. Also, the constancy of shade of a proprietary silicate cement was investigated using a reflectometer developed for the specific purpose of measuring off-white colours. A satisfactory uniformity of colour between batches of cement was confirmed. A need for guidance of students in shade selection was indicated.
